Superfoods / Functional foods

“Superfood” is a lay term coined in part by the media. Superfoods (called “functional foods” in scientific papers) refers to foods that provide an additional physiological benefit beyond that of meeting basic nutritional needs. Although a few functional foods are of animal origin, the majority are plant-based. In general, functional foods are packed full of nutrients including various vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants.
