Advanced glycation end products (AGEs)

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are produced as a result of glycation process (when a sugar molecule bonds with a protein or lipid without the presence of an enzyme). AGEs can be harmful to our skin when produced in excess. These AGEs can be produced endogenously (within our cells) but we can also get them from exogenous sources (such as through consuming foods higher in the glycaemic index).
