Rumination

Rumination is generally defined as a recurrent series of thoughts around a common theme; it’s an extreme form of self-reflection. It is often also called perseverative cognition. Rumination has been proposed as a way we respond to distress (negative stress). It involves passively and repetitively focusing on possible causes, symptoms, and consequences of distress. Unfortunately, rumination does not lead to problem-solving, changing our thoughts, or managing our feelings.
