Social jetlag

Research suggests that if our social and biological clocks don’t match up, we’re more likely to: have poor quality sleep, be overweight or obese, exhibit decreased mental and physical performance, use stimulants like nicotine, caffeine, or alcohol, develop metabolic syndrome, and experience stress, anxiety, or depression. This mismatch is called social jetlag. In other words, if our biological clock doesn’t synchronise with our work or activity patterns, it can disturb our bodily functions.
